Hi EME2040 friends! This week was so interesting in our class, meaning that there is so much to talk about.
Firstly, I looked a lot into some teacher websites. In my home school district of Palm Beach County, teachers do not have individual webpages that are visible to people who do not have accounts and are not students or parents. Because of this, I turned to Leon County Schools, right here in the Tallahassee area. I stumbled upon Kate Sullivan Elementary School and found a teacher who is teaching within my preferred age range of between Kindergarten and 3rd Grade.
I reviewed this class of First Graders. You could find an introductory page on the teacher, Ms. Toner, as well as a Class Supply List under the Announcements tag. The Important Documents section held forms such as field trip permission slips, and the calendar held important dates. Leon County Schools, overall, had much more information out into the public than expected, although teachers also had the opportunity to abstain from keeping an active website given the number of blank pages I found which were hyperlinked to teacher's names.
In the future, I strive to be teacher and this class has helped me a lot to envision my future aspirations as a teacher using technology. I loved the assignment where we created a newsletter and plan to use Word in the same manner in my classroom. The methods which we used word will also help me to create assignments much faster and easier, as well as better designed for usage. I also like the idea of keeping a class website, which is still something I am learning and perfecting as we speak. As I work on it longer, my skills become more refined and more equipped for usage in the classroom.
Finally, last week, we visited the Tech Sandbox in the College of Education. There were many tools that I loved to see and imagined introducing into my classroom, at the discretion of what we have money in the budget for. I loved the SmartBoards so much! A lot of people talk about how they used them growing up but I went to a poorer high school, so this was the first time personally that I got the chance to see and work with them. You can write on your own "board" that looks like a Chalkboard, as well as pull up resources on the Internet to use in lectures or lessons in class. I personally think that this is a fun way to keep students in the classroom engaged, as well as up to date in technology. I hope to use a SmartBoard not only for using the Board function, but also to incorporate other websites and online tools into lessons so it is not all straightforward and one-dimensional.
That's all I have for this week! Can't wait to talk about what is happening next! Emily
